An armed robber, who died after a have-a-go-hero restrained him in a
shop raid, smashed his head on a concrete beam while trying to escape, a
court heard today.
Father-of-two Shane Bryant, 29, of Birmingham, and a friend robbed a
Co-Op store in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, while wielding a golf
club and baseball bat on Thursday night.
As the pair tried to flee the scene, a 24-year-old man restrained Bryant
and the robber's accomplice mounted the pavement in his Audi in an
unsuccessful attempt to free his friend.
One of the crowd who detained suspect Bryant claims he collapsed shortly
after hitting his head on a beam as he tried to clamber over a gate
which passersby had shut.
Bryant died after police were called to reports of two men entering a
Co-op on Market Street in Ashby, and threatening staff with a baseball
bat and golf club.
He was rushed to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre following the raid
last Thursday night in a 'critical' condition but he died on Saturday
morning.
A 24-year-old man who helped foil Bryant's getaway was arrested on
suspicion of grievous bodily harm but has since been released pending
inquiries.
A 67-year-old man who helped restrain Bryant has told how he saw the
crook smash his head while trying to scale a gate by an alleyway at the
side of the shop.
The witness, who had been drinking with his two sons in a pub opposite
the Co-op at the time of the raid, said: 'It was Thursday night, around
